If you're passionate about the great outdoors, you've likely come across the term "14ers." These remarkable peaks present not only stunning vistas but also some of the most exhilarating hiking experiences. Climbing a 14er is more than just a physical challenge; it’s a journey that rewards you with a profound sense of achievement. In this blog, we’ll explore what sets these mountains apart, the best locations to tackle them, and hear from one of our MuskOx members on some of his personal experiences on his climbing adventures.

These U.S. peaks, often referred to as "fourteeners," are truly fascinating. These peaks are above 14,000 feet (4,267 meters) in elevation, which places them well above the treeline, offering stunning views and unique ecosystems. Many of these peaks hold cultural and spiritual significance for Indigenous peoples, and their names often reflect this heritage.

Most of the 14ers are found in the Rocky Mountains, particularly in Colorado, which boasts 58 of them. Other notable states with 14ers include California and Alaska. Mount Elbert in Colorado is the highest peak in the contiguous U.S. at 14,440 feet (4,401 meters), while Denali in Alaska is the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet (6,190 meters).

The Most Popular 14ers

Mount Elbert, Colorado

The tallest peak in Colorado at 14,440 feet, Mount Elbert is a popular choice for both novice and experienced hikers. Its standard route, the South Mount Elbert Trail, is well-marked and relatively accessible. The well-maintained trail and stunning panoramic views from the summit make it a must-visit for many climbers.

Grays & Torrey's Peak, Colorado

Often paired together, these two peaks offer beautiful views and a relatively straightforward path. Many hikers appreciate the opportunity to tackle both peaks in a single outing.

Mount Bierstadt

Often considered a great beginner's 14er, Bierstadt has a relatively short and straightforward hike, making it a favorite for those new to high-altitude climbing. Its proximity to Denver adds to its popularity.

Most Challenging 14ers

Capitol Peak

Known for its exposed ridges and challenging Class 4 climbing sections, Capitol Peak requires technical skills and careful route-finding. The infamous "knife edge" ridge adds to its difficulty.

Little Bear Peak

This peak is notorious for its steep terrain and challenging climbing routes, particularly the hourglass couloir, which can be dangerous due to rockfall and snow conditions.

Maroon Bells (Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak)

Both peaks are technically challenging, with loose rock and steep routes. They are often considered among the most difficult due to the rugged terrain and exposure.

Why Climb a 14er?

Physical Challenge

Climbing a 14er tests your physical endurance and mental fortitude. The altitude, rugged terrain, and changing weather conditions all contribute to the challenge.

One of our own MuskOx men, Ben Marsh, shared some about his personal experience:

“Legs burning, lungs scraping thin air for oxygen. At some points you go maybe 20-30 yards and then need to sit and catch your breath. It's a good challenge and helps you find some inner parts that maybe you haven't seen before.”

Scenic Beauty

The views from the summit of a 14er are unparalleled. Many peaks offer panoramic vistas that stretch for miles, showcasing stunning landscapes of lakes, forests, and other mountains.

“There’s an unmatched beauty when seeing the shadow cast by a mountain at sunrise from the summit. You can see for miles, and it feels like you're on top of the world”.

Sense of Accomplishment

Reaching the summit of a 14er is a significant achievement. It’s a rewarding experience that often fosters a deeper appreciation for nature and personal capability.

Climbing a 14er is more than just a hike; it's an adventure that challenges you physically and mentally while connecting you with the natural world. Whether you're a seasoned climber or a beginner looking to take on your first peak, there's a 14er waiting for you.
