Niagara Falls: A Friendly Face-Off Between the US & Canadian Sides
Niagara Falls, located on the border between Ontario, Canada, and New York, USA, is a breathtaking natural wonder that draws millions of visitors each year. Comprising three stunning waterfalls — the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls — Niagara Falls offers an epic experience that’s hard to beat. If you’re planning a trip, you might be wondering which side is better to visit: the Canadian or the US side? Let’s dive in and figure this one out together
Ahhh The Views
The vantage points from the Canadian side are certainly hard to beat. Offering a full panoramic view that will inspire you to sing “Oh, Canada” as you fix your gaze on the water. The Canadian Side provides the view of Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the 3 falls that make up Niagara falls and let me tell you, they are nothing short of spectacular. From the famous Queen Victoria Park, you can take in the full grandeur of the falls, especially during sunrise or sunset when the colors dance across the water. The misty rainbows that form add an enchanting touch that’s just begging to be captured on camera just like you in your MuskOx Flannel.
One of the most unique experiences comes from the Skylon Tower, sharing a bird’s-eye view from the Canadian side. This iconic observation tower offers stunning panoramic views of both the falls and the surrounding landscape. After taking in the sights, treat yourself to a meal at the revolving restaurant — because what’s better than dining while enjoying the majestic views?

As night falls, the Canadian side truly shines. We mean that literally! The falls are illuminated in a spectacular light show, turning the cascading waters into a canvas of vibrant colors. And during special occasions, you might even catch fireworks!
While the Canadian side showcases the Horseshoe Falls, the American side features the American Falls and the charming Bridal Veil Falls and offers a different vibe, with a more rugged, natural feel. The Niagara Falls State Park is the oldest state park in the US and is filled with scenic walking trails and stunning vistas. If you’re up for a little adventure, the Niagara Gorge offers hiking trails that provide breathtaking views and a chance to experience the region’s natural beauty up close. The walk along the river offers a peaceful experience where you can enjoy the beauty of nature without the hustle and bustle.
The Observation Tower is also located on the US side which offers a unique vantage point, allowing you to look down at the falls and the surrounding park. It’s an ideal spot for snapping photos, especially with the backdrop of the American Falls and the mist rising from the water.

Despite its various observation decks, you’ll have difficulties seeing the entire horseshoe bend from the American side. Therefore, Canada seems to have the best vistas overall. However, the American side of Niagara Falls offers a closer and more intimate view of the falls. While you can get close to the upper side of Horseshoe Falls in Canada, you can truly feel the American Falls.
Immersive Experiences
Niagara Falls State Park on the US side is home to observation points like Prospect Point and the Cave of the Winds, allowing visitors to get remarkably close to the cascades. The Bridal Veil Falls and the American Falls can be admired from various viewpoints within the park, providing a more serene and immersive experience. The Cave of the Winds experience, where visitors can walk right up to the base of Bridal Veil Falls, offers a thrilling encounter with the sheer power and mist of the falls.

A similar experience can be shared on the Canadian side with the Journey Behind the Falls. It offers visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the majestic Horseshoe Falls where visitors descend via an elevator to a series of tunnels that lead to viewing platforms located right behind the falls. You’ll get to stand just a few feet away from the cascading water, feeling the mist and hearing the thunderous roar of the falls giving you a unique perspective and an appreciation for the sheer power of nature.
Ride the Waves
Apart from the Cave of the Winds experience and Journey Behind the Falls, you can still have a thrilling and up close encounter with the falls. Both sides offer boat rides which bring you close up to the massive Horseshoe Falls; the Maid Of The Mist from the U.S. and its Canadian counterpart the Hornblower Niagara Cruise. These boat tours take you right up to the base of the falls, where you’ll experience the roar of the water and the thrill of getting drenched by the mist. It's like the ultimate water ride, but with Mother Nature in the driver’s seat.

The Verdict: Viewing Niagara Falls from the US or Canada?
In the most Canadian way, (or maybe us Americans just don’t like to admit defeat) it’s a draw! Why choose one when you can easily visit both? Each side has its unique charm, and a little cross-border adventure can make for a more enriching experience. The Canadian side dazzles with its iconic views, vibrant atmosphere, and thrilling experiences. In contrast, the US side offers tranquil beauty, serene nature walks, and budget-friendly options. If you do decide to visit, don’t forget your passport! Which, by the way, we hear you end up in the express line if you’re wearing a MuskOx Flannel in your passport photo? Maybe that’s a myth, but we think it’s worth a shot.
