This photo captures a young pair of muskoxen in their thick winter coats, standing in a patch of alpine bearberry heather near the foot of Mount Snøhetta. The bull is on the left, the cow to the right — both likely around five or six years old, their black-tipped horns hinting at youth, yet mature in form. They stand over autumn’s remnants, revealed only when they clear the snow in search of plants and lichens — a search that grows more desperate as winter deepens and nothing new grows until May. Their curiosity, still untouched by fear of humans, brought them close enough for this quiet moment. Kaspar notes their innocence, a trait that won’t last long in the wild. Fittingly, the location is called Snøheim — “snowy home” in Norwegian — an apt name for this frozen, yet gentle scene in Dovrefjell National Park.
